Printing with Botanicals Short Course

Course description

This course focuses on experimental printmaking using plant matter for use in various art practices including fine art, illustration and textile design. Also suitable for beginners or those building a portfolio for further study.

The course will explore different techniques using plant and foliage to create images and textures, also looking at samples of print, illustration and design for inspiration.

We may forage from the local area or students can bring in samples of foliage to use.

Entry Requirements: Students do not need specialist skills, just design ideas and enthusiasm.

Level: All levels

Clear, easy to understand lessons: 

  • Our tutors will explain things in easy to understand, accessible English. If they need to use any special terminology they will make sure they explain what they mean. 
  • New methods will be shown to students through live demonstrations, in a way that’s crystal clear and easy to understand.

  • Shop in our college shops for any materials you might need 
  • Ask questions of your tutor in real time

A certificate of completion: 

  • You've put the work in so we want to make sure you have something to show for it! 
  • As long as you attend a minimum of 80% of your classes, we will provide you with a certificate of attendance. 
  • We always recommend you attend all of the classes so that you get the most out of the experience! 
  • Certificates are great to complement your cv. 

This course is scheduled to run on campus in a face-to-face delivery format. Please note that due to the ongoing pandemic situation this course may be adapted in line with UK government guidance or other operational requirements. This may include changing course location (to another UAL site), cancellation of the course, or moving part or all of the course online. In the event of any changes being required we will inform you as soon as possible and support you in any changes required. Please bear this in mind when making any travel, visa, or accommodation arrangements.

Topics covered

  • Dyeing paper using plant / vegetable based dyes
  • Using mono printing and sun printing techniques on a variety of papers to create finished artwork, or textures to use as background in design or collage
  • Making transparent artwork for further methods of printing e.g. screen print
  • Investigating how results can be used in subsequent design and image making
  • Preserving plant matter for further use with printing techniques
  • An informal course with room for experiment and a chance to make an assortment of printed artwork to take away with you

Materials

Please bring the following with you to the first session:

  • Apron
  • Notepad, pencils
  • Rubber gloves
  • Sellotape
  • Scissors
  • Pritt stick

Other materials will be provided but students may wish to bring in specific items to complement their individual work.
