Have you been inspired by the latest trend in home sewing, but not sure where to start? Then this is the sewing course for you. Working in small groups, of no more than 12, you’ll learn everything you need to be able to make clothes (top, skirt, dress or trousers) from a bought pattern.
This garment making course will begin by analysing your chosen pattern deciphering the markings and terminology. You’ll discover how to layout and mark your fabric correctly, before cutting out your garment pieces. Alongside this you’ll also be given an introduction to the professional industrial-standard sewing machines, where you’ll be shown how to complete several types of stitching in order for you to assemble your finished garment. With the guidance of the tutor you’ll work your way through the construction process to create a practice garment, altering as necessary to ensure a good fit. Once happy with your garment, you’ll be able to recreate it in the fabric of your choice (time allowing).
The course will include:
- Taking measurements
- Preparing fabrics
- Laying and cutting
- Sewing and fitting
- Pressing and finishing
Beginners. You should have an interest in the subject area and a desire to learn but no previous experience is required.
Your course place is confirmed once you have booked online or via the phone using a credit or debit card. There is no deadline for booking. Places are offered on a first come, first served basis, and all courses have a maximum number of students. We suggest you book early to avoid disappointment.
In order to fully participate in the practical exercises please bring the following materials/equipment to the first class:
- Metric tape measure
- Dressmakers pins
- Fabric scissors
- Paper scissors
- 30cm ruler
- Glue stick
- Pencil, pen and notebook
- Tailors chalk (1 white and 1 pink or blue)
- Hand sewing needles
- 2 or 3 different colours of thread (for tailor tacking)
- Stitch unpicker
You will also need to purchase 1 pattern for a simple, non-lined top, dress, trouser or skirt and enough fabric to make your chosen garment at the end of the course. Fabric type and amount will be specified on your chosen pattern (please do not select a pattern that requires stretch fabric as this requires specialist machinery that is not covered on this course). You should choose your pattern from any of the following pattern catalogues: Butterick, (Fast and Easy or very easy pattern) or Simplicity (it's so easy pattern). You must choose a pattern that is closest to your size. These patterns can normally be purchased from any fabric/dressmaking shop or from John Lewis (Oxford Street). You will be supplied calico for making a practice garment, known as a toile. Please do not select a pattern that requires stretch fabric as this requires specialist machinery that is not covered on this course.
