Description

Fashion Business is a very broad subject and includes buying, merchandising, marketing, branding and visual merchandising. This course will explore all of these subjects and how they are linked in the overall supply chain and retail environment. The course is designed to help you understand and explore the key ideas influencing the fashion industry today and to think creatively and more deeply about your chosen area.

You will be taught how to know your market and customer and how to use this within fashion business and chosen area. 

The course will also include gallery visits and guest speakers and is a fantastic opportunity for students to explore the different areas of the fashion business world.

You will reflect on your work and be critical and develop ideas and opinions.

A career in the fashion business can be very rewarding and our short course will help you choose the path you want to take and study at higher education.

Course includes the following:

  • Know your market – competitor analysis as well as gathering primary and secondary research.
  • Know your customer – Customer attributes,  Segmentation, Targeting and Positioning
  • Setting corporate and business objectives for fashion companies
  • Concept of branding within the fashion industry
  • Product development
  • Fashion forecasting
  • Sourcing (ethical issues)
  • Buying and Merchandising – sizing, quantity, allocation, range planning
  • Visual Merchandising
  • Marketing and Communications - SOSTAC (situation, objectives, strategy, tactics, action and control)
  • Finance – cash flow, profit, margin


Course Objectives:

  • To understand the context and subject of your chosen degree
  • To explore the key ideas influencing the fashion industry today
  • To understand how to research and how to seek new references
  • To understand how to reflect on your work, be critical and develop ideas and opinions
  • To think creatively and more deeply about your chosen area

Entry Requirements

IELTS level 6.0 or above if English isn’t your first language, with at least 5.5 in reading, writing, listening and speaking (please check our English Language requirements)

If you are from OUTSIDE the European Economic Area (EEA) you MUST present your passport and valid visa/proof of entry clearance to the Short Course office before the start of your course. Please note you will NOT be allowed to study, if do not present a valid visa/proof of entry clearance on the first day of the course.

Tutor information

Paul Buckle has worked in the fashion business for over 40 years. Starting work in his father’s menswear shop, progressing through operations and buying and merchandising functions for a number of leading UK retailers and finally setting up his own fashion consultancy 7 years ago. He completed an MBA in 1987 and lectures at the London College of Fashion, runs training and distance learning programmes for the British Independent Retail Association and has a number of consultancies based around the Fashion Business.
