Description

On this subtraction pattern cutting course you will explore and experiment with a unique method of hollow construction as developed and taught by designer Julian Roberts.

This pattern cutting technique, known as 'subtraction cutting' or 'zero waste', makes the most of the negative spaces that can be opened up in fabric and falls somewhere between traditional pattern cutting and draping - resulting in experimental garments that break from the boundaries of the usual garment shapes.

Through a series of live demonstrations, critiques, workshops and presentations you will create and take home your own subtraction cut garment of your choice.

Level:

Beginners/Intermediate. Some basic experience in pattern cutting and sewing is required for this course. You should have an interest in the subject area along with a desire to learn.


Booking:

Your course place is confirmed once you have booked online or via the phone using a credit or debit card. There is no deadline for booking. Places are offered on a first come, first served basis, and all courses have a maximum number of students. We suggest you book early to avoid disappointment.


Tutor information

Julian Roberts is a fashion designer and filmmaker, who has shown 13 collections at London Fashion Week and won the British Fashion Council's New Generation Award five times. Julian studied womenswear in Newcastle upon Tyne, and completed his menswear MA at the Royal College of Art, London. He was awarded a Professorship and set up the new fashion school at the University of Hertfordshire in the UK in 2004, and now lectures in MA Mixed Media Textiles at the Royal College of Art in London. Julian has lead creative cutting workshops at over 20 universities in the UK, and in over 17 countries worldwide. He has also worked for both the BBC and British Council as a Fashion Adviser. Julian Roberts is the inventor of a garment pattern cutting method called 'subtraction cutting', which he demonstrates live in front of large audiences in America and the UK, teaching people of all ages and levels of expertise how to construct creative clothing. Materials

Notebook, pen, camera (camera phone is fine), fabric scissors, paper scissors, pins, notebooks, rulers, tape measures and any other dressmaking equipment or patterns you may wish to use.
