Window dressing and styling is the art of driving retail success by creating displays which engage and excite the customer, and bring them into the store to browse and shop.
In this course you will learn the core principles of window dressing, and the science behind creating inspiration for your customer. You will develop your designs through the medium of your choice (students in the past have used Photoshop, Illustrator, 3D models and sketching) and receive expert feedback each week on your designs. By the end of the course, you will have built up an impressive portfolio of fashion window designs which can be printed / photographed for display or saved to an online portfolio.
- Basic principles of window dressing and visual merchandising.
- Creating a strong brand within your window.
- Building and creating your own Window Designs using your choice of program / medium.
- Current trends in the retail industry.
- Merchandise selection and accessories within window display.
- Effective use of Colour, POS and lighting within window display.
- Mannequin handling and styling.
- Creating an effective window linked hot spot area in store.
By the end of this course you will have a better understanding of;
- Basic principles of Window dressing and Visual Merchandising.
- How to create a strong, recongnisable brand image for your window installation.
- Mannequin and Bust Form dressing and styling.
- How to create an instore hot space area which is linked to your window.
- Produced a body of work that will contribute to a portfolio that can be used for the industry or to enter into further study.

Level: Intermediate (suggested for students who have completed Visual Merchandising and Display.

Sarah Manning works for a selection of London based retail and department stores, offering freelance services in visual merchandising training and consultancy. Her work includes planning and installing in-store promotions, consulting on new fixtures and installations, and window design and dressing. As well as teaching e-learning Visual Merchandising and Display, Sarah also teaches at London College of Communication for display design and fashion presentation. Sarah has previously worked for Benetton, Harrods, Marks and Spencer, Liberty, Next and Selfridges.
In order to fully participate in the practical exercises please have the following materials/equipment for the first class:
- Notepad and pen
- A recent computer with a recent operating system
- An up-to-date web browser. (It would be advisable to ensure you
- have access to two separate web browsers eg Safari and Mozilla
- Firefox or Google Chrome and Internet Explorer)
- Microphone (a headset with microphone/headphones is recommended)
Finally, a good broadband connection is also recommended. (Mobile data 3G/4G or a mobile dongle might not provide sufficient bandwidth).
