This introductory fashion course explores the different areas of the fashion industry business, giving you an insight into how they all work, the realities of working in the industry and an idea of which area you might like to work in.

The course investigates the four main areas of the industry, design, manufacturing, marketing and PR, and retailing and looks at the key players and their roles. You will look at where trends come from, how the high street and high end designers manufacture their product, how marketing and PR are crucial elements and the changing world of fashion retailing. This practical course will explain to you thedifferent elements through case studies and examples from today’s marketplace.

The real-time chat sessions are fully interactive allowing you to communicate easily with the tutor at the same time as fellow students. You will participate in the live classes each week and you will undertake weekly assignments to be completed in your own time.

All online learning courses include weekly chat sessions with your tutor and other students on the course, which are conducted through an interactive seminar (called Blackboard Collaborate). The chat sessions will include text and voice/video chat, as well as an opportunity to 'share' your tutor's desktop so that s/he can navigate you through websites, powerpoint presentations and other work. These sessions are essential to attend each week, so please check the times of the course when you book and take into account any local time differences.

You may also be required to undertake weekly assignments between sessions. These will be housed on our Workflow website, along with additional resources and discussion forums which can be used to interact with fellow students in between classes. You may be expected to dedicate between one - two hours a week to these self-study projects. A full technical specification is listed in 'Materials'.

Beginners. This course is suitable for absolute beginners and more experienced designers who would like to improve their existing figure drawing skills.

Tutor information

Alison Lowe is a serial entrepreneur with a successful background in profitable business growth, both through her own businesses and those she supports. Alison’s quick understanding and industry knowledge of what fashion brands really need is impressive and effective. She works with many exciting emerging fashion designers and established creative businesses in London today and provides a great insight into how PR, Marketing and Business Management can work as part of a holistic approach to a brand’s development.
 
Alison established her fashion agency Felicities in 2003, having discovered a gap in the market for business development, PR, marketing and sales support for emerging creative brands. During the last 12 years, Alison has worked with over 200 clients to break into new markets both in the UK and Internationally and established a range of sponsorship, partnership and promotional opportunities for her brands. Felicities and its clients feature regularly on the International Fashion Week schedules. Prior to setting up Felicities, Alison had the kind of portfolio career that is a trait of many successful entrepreneurs. She has established, run and sold several businesses including RoadRunners, the international courier business and Chameleon, a promotional management company. In addition, Alison has worked in the public sector as a business support consultant for Business Link and established a large cross sector consortium for a voluntary sector project. Alison teaches on several business courses at London College of Fashion and is regularly asked to guest lecture at international universities and conferences.



Materials

In order to fully participate in the practical exercises please have the following materials/equipment for the first class:

  • Notepad and pen

In addition to the materials listed above, you will need:

  • A recent computer with a recent operating system    
  • An up-to-date web browser. (It would be advisable to ensure you have access to two separate web browsers eg Safari and Mozilla Firefox or
  • Google Chrome and Internet Explorer)    
  • Microphone (a headset with microphone/headphones is recommended)    
  • Headphones    
  • Webcam

Finally, a good broadband connection is also recommended. (Mobile data 3G/4G or a mobile dongle might not provide sufficient bandwidth).
