Description

This course will introduce you to costume design for film and theatre. You will gain a knowledge of character and script analysis, the development of visual relationships and how to communicate with the audience though the use of costume. The course will cover the role of the costume designer and costume team. You will gain an understanding of each stage of the costume design process, from the development of ideas to the final performance and leave with a practical understanding of the costume designer’s role within the performance industry. As part of the course you will also complete a project reflecting the creative process of costume design.

The course is designed for anyone looking to extend their skills in theatre and film practice. It is suitable for those with no previous experience in performance and those who want to diversify from their current creative discipline.

The course includes:

  • Character and script breakdown
  • Research (historical, location, personality)
  • Concept development
  • How to present your ideas using drawings and models
  • Production processes
  • Developing your creative critic

Level:

Beginners. You should have an interest in the subject area and a desire to learn but no previous experience is required.

In order to fully participate in the practical exercises please bring the following materials/equipment to the first class:

  • Sketch book/A4 minimum
  • Pencils
  • Eraser and Sharpener
  • Preferred colouring tools/pens,pencils,pastels etc
  • A range of old magazines and newspaper/colour and black & white
  • Glue
