Description

On this course you'll get valuable hands-on experience, make patterns and do prep work for making small leather goods and belts. It's a chance to learn traditional leather craft techniques to get creative and personalise your own work. A series of tasks teaches you different techniques, construction methods and application of fastenings including knots, buckles, buttons and toggles, fringes, plaiting, strap cutting, traditional and creative seams (machine and hand sewn). Practical projects might include simple bags/purses, mobile/iPod cases, pencil cases, belts and belt purses, table mats or coasters. You will make a small leather piece such as a purse, mobile/camera cover etc.

The course includes:

  • Learning about types of leather - qualities, uses and suitability
  • Use of industrial equipment including sewing machines
  • Hand and machine stitching and finishing
  • Pattern cutting techniques and preparation
  • Preparation of leather and processes for accessories
  • Developing creative ideas with 3D samples

Level:

Beginners. You should have an interest in the subject area and a desire to learn but no previous experience is required.

Booking: 

Your course place is confirmed once you have booked online or via the phone using a credit or debit card. There is no deadline for booking. Places are offered on a first come, first served basis, and all courses have a maximum number of students. We suggest you book early to avoid disappointment.


Tutor information

Caroline Morgan specialised in fashion at St. Martins School of Art in the early 1960s. She has taught design and accessories at a number of fashion colleges including London College of Fashion since 1978, Cordwainers and The Royal College, where she was instrumental in introducing the Accessories specialism to the fashion department. She has also taught as a visiting lecturer in India and Finland. For many years she ran her own business designing and making belts and leather accessories under her own label, Skimp, and supplied shops and worked with designers in the UK, Europe, the States and Japan. Her work was been selected by the Design Council and shown at exhibitions, and she has contributed to various publications on the use of leather. She is a trustee of the National Leather Collection. Through her experience in both teaching and design, Caroline Morgan has developed considerable knowledge and skills in the craft of leather. 



Materials

In order to fully participate in the practical exercises please bring the following materials/equipment to the first class:

  • Pencils, pens and eraser

Specialist tools will be provided, however, please budget up to £50 for working in the materials of your choice.
