Description

This leather surface pattern design courses offers you an introduction to the surface decoration and enhancement of leather. Here's your chance to develop a creative, experimental approach to working with leather, and explore some of the many decorative possibilities out there.

Highly versatile and workable, leather can be coloured, dyed, moulded, textured and finished in many different ways. This course introduces you to many techniques and tricks of the trade, through exploring a variety of practical projects from flat artwork, plaques and wall hangings, to 3D products such as footwear, accessories and clothing.

The course includes:

  • Use of stamping and carving tools
  • Application of dyes and stains
  • Hand painting on leather
  • Perforating, filigree & punching
  • Plugging and relief work
  • Moulding and cuir bouilli
  • Digital image transfer
  • Foiling and studding

Level:

Beginners. You should have an interest in the subject area and a desire to learn but no previous experience is required.

Booking: 

Your course place is confirmed once you have booked online or via the phone using a credit or debit card. There is no deadline for booking. Places are offered on a first come, first served basis, and all courses have a maximum number of students. We suggest you book early to avoid disappointment.

Tutor information

Elaine Loft is a designer maker with 35+ years experience in the field of footwear and accessories. After training at the world famous Cordwainers College (now part of London College of Fashion), Elaine worked in the industry and travelled to Italy to develop her skills and knowledge of bespoke and fashion leather goods. She returned to Cordwainers in 1984 to begin her teaching career, where she remained for 26 years before leaving to pursue her own business and develop her collection in 2011.
