This leather bag making course will take you through the basics of how to make a leather backpack. You will learn basic pattern cutting skills and make your own patterns for the backpack. You will then cut your own leather and learn how to use the industrial machinery to make your leather bag.

It will be machine turned and so have all seams on the inside. You will also learn how to use a strap cutter and how to put eyelets in. The rucksack will be made to a standard pattern and within the style/size capabilities of the studio.

Level:

Beginners. You should have an interest in the subject area and a desire to learn but no previous experience is required.

Booking: 

Your course place is confirmed once you have booked online or via the phone using a credit or debit card. There is no deadline for booking. Places are offered on a first come, first served basis, and all courses have a maximum number of students. We suggest you book early to avoid disappointment.

Tutor information

Selina Cheong has been working in the leather accessories industry for over 8 years. She graduated from Central St Martins in 2004. Her career began as a textile designer when she retrained in accessories at Cordwainers.  She has worked freelance for a number of different designers and recently set up a partnership with another leathersmith making samples for catwalks, press pieces and pre production development, as well as small production runs. Selina’s clients range from high end luxury to young start up designers.

In order to fully participate in the practical exercises please bring the following materials/equipment to the first class:

  • Notebook
  • Small sharp scissors
