This 2 week course combines the skills of bag design and bag pattern cutting, and will show you how the ideas you have for a whole host of bags can turn from sketch to reality. It’s a wide-ranging course covering the basics as well as in-depth detail about all manner of techniques and details, concepts and styles.
The first week will start with learning all the basics to do with pattern cutting. This will help you understand what you can design and make into a reality. It may also open your eyes to new possibilities with bags. Your idea will become a reality as you develop your pattern, learn professional working practice and how to sequence your work flow. You will end up producing a set of patterns that you will be able to take into production.
In the second week, the tutor will lead you through the process from researching trends and creating mood boards to your initial ideas and final design. A trip to some well-known London retailers will help inspire your final design. You will then return to the university to make your patterns and paper mock-up of your final design. Along the way you’ll learn about material selections, suppliers and be introduced to different finishes, trims and styles.
The course includes:
- Design and trend research methods
- Basic understanding of Spec Sheets – working drawings and material specifications.
- Basic pattern cutting techniques
- Good working practice
- Pattern development
- Work sequences
- Patterns for different construction methods
- A huge range of concepts and styles
- Hands-on involvement
You’ll finish the course with patterns for all constructions and your final bag design, and 3-dimensional cardboard mock ups of everything you’ve worked on plus the information you need to execute almost any design you can imagine such as totes, shoppers, clutches, evening bags, day bags, sports bags, pouches, pochettes and practical bags; soft or structured, big or small.
Beginners. You should have an interest in the subject area and a desire to learn but no previous experience is required.
