Inditex - Footwear and Accessories

Twenty eight BA Cordwainers Bags and Accessories students and sixty five BA Cordwainers Footwear students were briefed by the Tempe team, from the company Inditex whose group's stores include Zara, Pull & Bear, Massimo Dutti, Bershka Stradivarius, Oysho, Zara Home, Lefties and Uterqüe, to design a collection of shoes or accessories for one of Tempe’s retail chains for SS16 season.

The unique Inditex business model, which enables a quick response to consumer demand, was the focus of the brief. Students were asked to address the consumer and the need for commerciality.

the Tempe team (Tempe being the division who handle Inditex’s accessories and footwear offer) flew in from Spain three times during the project for presentations, critiques and to judge the winner. The prize was a year’s paid internship in the design studio at the Tempe H.Q. in Alicante, Spain for one student on each course. But the Tempe team were so impressed with the students' work, they doubled the placement offer to four.

Student feedback:

The best part was having the Tempe team come, being able to meet them and have the experience of being involved with a global company.

Course leader Lindsey Riley commented:

‘The enthusiasm and expertise of Carmen de Cachavera in HR, Footwear designer Numan and Accessories Designer Kim, plus the back up from the rest of the Tempe team, Julie and Raul, made this project invaluable, fun to do and we all learned a great deal about this important part of the fashion industry. We are already talking about a project for next year with our new found Spanish friends.’

The Accessories winner Kamakshi Palli combined 3D printing, laser cutting and handcrafted interlinked leather detailing to create a black leather shoulder bag. Anna Hyvönen was chosen for her fresh and feminine ‘Party in the Garden’ theme pink petal bag.

For Footwear Ashleigh Chambers was selected for her hand-crafted metallic rosette mule, which was fashioned to look as if a gift wrapped and inspired by Jeff Koons use of colour and metallic finishes. Firados Bin Rasiff Mohammed was also chosen for his space age Cowboy styled shoes and boots.
