Metadata explores the migration of ideas across images, objects, commodities and texts. The exhibition is curated by the research project Bilderfahrzeuge, a term meaning ‘image vehicles’ coined by German art historian Aby Warburg. In the overlap between research and practice, Metadata takes an interdisciplinary approach but core to the project is Warburg’s interest in the journey of the image over time and space and the internationalist perspective that encourages, a viewpoint pertinent for the times in which we live.

Temporalities looks at the rich history of film and video at Central Saint Martins and the way artists return to the medium again and again to respond to contemporary issues. Starting a generational dialogue, the exhibition places films by students and staff from the 1970s and 80s alongside new work by current MRes: Moving Image, alumni such as Isaac Julien and Laure Prouvost as well as artists less well known outside of their field.
Temporalities will be accompanied by talks, screenings and live teaching events exploring changes in pedagogy and media, including a display by students on MA Culture, Criticism and Curation in the CSM Museum window.
