Interview

Tell us about yourself…

I am one of the two senior technicians. I studied BA Jewellery Design here at Saint Martins, and when I left I worked for a number of companies such as Liberty’s, Clive Burr and Ben Day Jewellery. I went on to work for myself for several years, and then was asked to come and work here. At first part time, then full time. I’ve been here for 10 years now.

What do you love most about your job?

The variety. I like meeting all the students from different backgrounds, and seeing how their backgrounds influence them, and then bring things to us.

What's your favourite thing about Central Saint Martins?

I think again, the diversity. You get some art schools which almost put a stamp on what their students produce, whereas CSM doesn’t. There is a greater sense of variety and diversity. Hopefully it will keep on that way.

I think this building feels much more like an art school than the old ones. There is so much more for everyone to look at and get involved with.

Who or what is your biggest inspiration?

I actually don’t like to follow jewellery even though I love it. The last thing I’d do is read up about jewels. I like photographers more. Ernst Haas is my favourite. And for directors: Wes Anderson.

What advice would you give to new students?

Not to be involved in jewellery before coming here. Not to try and box themselves in as ‘jewellers’ before coming to college. The course itself is so open and diverse, a certain naivety is almost an advantage when starting. This is for every course actually.
