Biography

I was born in Tehran, Iran and now live and work in London. My work is primarily concerned with the moving image, which takes the form of single screen works, installations, interventions and animation, still photography and the production of texts. I approach the film as collage, working with on- and offline material and with editing and animation techniques alike. Narratives emerge through this process of visual and audio ‘realignment’. My written texts oscillate between the poetic and the factual, the personal and the philosophic, recited by actors in the form of voiceovers and overlaid onto a composed soundtrack. The spoken word weaves the fragmented narratives together contextually and rhythmically.

My works, whilst employing different subjects and scenarios, have a connecting thread, a commonality, namely there is a certain kind of agitation, a restlessness and a deliberate disjuncture that ruptures the familiar trajectory of the traditional narrative. This agitation and an unwillingness to settle reflects upon the current state of things socially, politically and ideologically.

I have exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. This includes: 3rd Mardin Biennial, Mardin, Turkey; Marrakesh Biennale; The Centre for Contemporary Art Lagos, Nigeria; Upstream Gallery, Amsterdam; Katara Art Center, Qatar; Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin/Madrid, Pompidou centre, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin,  Reina Sofia National Museum, Madrid; and in the UK: screening with Cinenova |The Showroom, Beaconsfield Gallery, Redux Projects, Paradise Row and Camden Art Centre.

In the past, I have also co-curated a number of exhibitions with the artist Paul Eachus, including the multi-site project called ‘Use this kind of Sky’. It was funded by the Art Council of England and manifested as a gallery show, site-specific installation, radio broadcast, film and video screening, online publication and online Forum.
