Fine Art Programme; Course Leader, BA Fine Art
I am an artist, writer and the BA Fine Art Course leader at Central Saint Martins.
I have taught at a range of institutions internationally, most notably at Parsons Paris, Ohio State University, l'Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Valenciennes and Kent Institute of Art and Design. My pedagogical interests are best represented by the Tableau Research Project that I founded in 2010 which questions ideas of medium and ‘expanded practice’ explored in the conference Tableau: Photo, Painting, Object (Tate Modern, 2011), ‘The Tableau Project’, an issue of the Journal of Visual Art Practice (Intellect, 2013) and through the activities of the Tableau Research Group at Central Saint Martins.
My academic and pedagogical interests relate directly to my studio practice where I engage aspects of image in works that utilise collage, montage, photography and painting. My own web site, mickfinch.com, has more details about my work and activities. I regularly exhibit internationally, most recently in ‘Engrams’ (a solo exhibition at the Piper Gallery, London in 2013), ‘Painting, Tableau, Stage’ (a group exhibition at the Urban Space, Columbus, Ohio, USA in 2013), ‘Dirty Pop’ (a group exhibition at &Model, Leeds, 2013) and ‘The Producers’ (a group exhibition at the British School at Rome in 2011).
In 2011 I was an Abbey Fellow in Painting at the British School at Rome and I am a senior scholar of the Terra Foundation in Paris. I am on the editorial boards of the Journal of Visual Art Practice and the Journal of Contemporary Painting and I have edited issues for both publications. I am also a founding member of the cross-UAL research group ‘Paint Club’ and the French research network ‘de la peinture’.
