Biography

I have been working with video, sculptural installation, works on paper and event based practices since graduating from Central St Martins Fine Art in 1993. My practice is concerned with the transmission and interpretation of culture across time. I explore relationships between cinema, sculpture and live performance, where the spectator, art object and its relative position in space and time become an interdisciplinary medium. I explore object and image-making as potential event.

My open approach to art-making, as well as years of exhibiting internationally at museum level, gives students a sense of confidence to expand their practices beyond initial concepts. Recent commissions and exhibitions include projects at Tate, Hayward Gallery, BFI Southbank and Channel 4 and my work is in the Arts Council national collection. The experience of thinking about work professionally crosses over to the way I work with students, this is to open up ideas by thinking tangentially about fine art, to question core concepts and research critically with students. I specifically encourage students to explore their work beyond the labour of the studio to the consideration of exhibition or activation; where the work finds its audience and how this situation may change its interpretation.

I teach across the Fine Art department, supporting students to expand their practices through considerations of film, sound, editing and the interstitial position of moving image media as cultural data. I am currently developing a new body of work through considerations of Lacan’s psychoanalytic approaches to horror and half-spoken truth, through film, drawing and writing. My video work is distributed through LUX and I am represented by Rodeo Gallery.
