Vanessa Luther-Smith

I am an Associate Lecturer teaching life drawing to students taking the MA Character Animation course at CSM.

I worked in the British animation industry for thirty years as an animator and animation artist on numerous commercials, feature films and TV series. I started in the industry before the use of computers, so I have a solid background in 2D drawn animation. In later years, I transferred to experimenting with various software, both for animating and for my artwork.

My passion remains with drawing the human form and capturing its vitality and movement within the space it occupies. I strongly believe in the discipline of observing the figure and understanding its construction, in order to convincingly draw it. There are many ways to achieve this and my approach is to encourage students as individuals; to explore their drawing practice and to enjoy the process.

I’ve been teaching for many years, both classes and individuals. In addition to my own local classes, I’ve taught life drawing at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication. I also teach English language (TEFL) classes to foreign students from all over the world. I’m a practising artist and have had several successful exhibitions. I’m continually exploring ways to develop my artwork and what I have to offer my students.
