I am an Associate Lecturer on the course. After completing my post-graduate research exploring semiotic and post-semiotic models of communication and culture, I combined lecturing at the University of Greenwich (Science Fiction/Psychoanalysis/Cultural Studies/Modernity-Postmodernity) with journalism. A regular writer on culture and the visual arts, for The Guardian, The Observer and The Independent, I was Visual Arts editor and deputy Cultural Studies editor for The Modern Review, and worked with Oliviero Toscani as editor of Colors. Working on branding, trend reports and communications products I have worked with multinational and SMEs in the Media, Financial Services and Retail sectors. For 15 years, as editor of Culture Lab, then as writer of Cubed, I covered emerging innovation in science and technology for the British Council and as editor of Varoommagazine since 2010, I helped document creativity in the ‘made image’. I have recently written catalogues for Noma Bar and Martin Creed, and I am author of Illusive 4 for Gestalten books.
My current research interests around theories of innovation, Futures discourses, and how new relationships between the digital and physical is changing modes of working. It’s an area explored in my role as Executive Editor of Be: journal of the Built Environment Trust highlighting innovation in architecture and engineering, urbanism and landscape. In the latter capacity, I have recently helped curate exhibitions on the Circular Economy, the Night-Time economy, Wellbeing, and Changing Places a survey of graduate work from architecture graduates. I am currently working towards completing his MA in Academic Practice in Art, Design and Communication, with a dissertation exploring modes of learning in innovation practices. John has PhD in Philosophy (University of Warwick) and MA in Philosophy (University College, Dublin).
