With a background in art and design education Darragh Casey has a design vision driven by a need to provide more than objects for consumption and often reacts against this. His MA research springs from a fundamental desire to manipulate our perceptions, subvert our habits and Casey regularly uses humour to challenge the boundaries of practices.
Shelving the Body aims to disrupt our habitual relationships with furniture and reassess the idea of the user. This subversion, initiated through a series of experimentation and trials, approaches the typology of the shelf with a physical consideration for the figure. At times, the outcomes often reduce the role of the figure to that of a shelved object. Exploring the idea of mutual dependency, challenging its user, or simply taking inspiration from the figures presence. Shelf Portraits, created and photographed in Cork, Ireland, shelves three generations of the Casey family. The series focuses on the traditional role of the shelf as a device to display, portraying people significant to the artist alongside objects relevant to their own lives and personalities.
Darragh has been professionally involved with organizations such as; Camper Shoes (Majorca), Crafts Council of Ireland, Van Cleef and Arpels (London), RHA (Dublin), National Botanic Gardens (Dublin) and Cow House Studios (Wexford).
Since graduating Darraghs shelf portraits have been commissioned by private collectors keen to shoot family groups in his iconic style. Recently he collaborated with peers and collectors for his book Shelving the Body. He is in demand internationally as consultant and lecturer and has recently started working for the Heatherwick Studio on the London Garden Bridge.
