Hannah Martin

I graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2005 and founded my own brand almost immediately. It's been a long, hard road but Hannah Martin London is still going from strength to strength.

We produce fine jewellery 'for men, that girlfriends steal'. All our pieces are made here in London. We sell internationally through a select handful of stockists and also through our online store. I work with clients on bespoke work and also collaborate with fashion designers and other brands. I run the brand with my business partner and we both also consult.

Why did you decide to study at Central Saint Martins?

I wanted to study at Central Saint Martins because I knew it was the best.

What advice would you give to students who are beginning their studies at Central Saint Martins?

I believe that Central Saint Martins is the best art school you could go to, but I also believe that you only get out what you put in. If you take every opportunity and work incredibly hard you will have a great experience. All the staff, visiting lecturers and companies that work with CSM are fantastic - but you have to grab the opportunity whilst you are there to get as much knowledge from them as you can!

And for students about to graduate?

It's a pretty tough world out there once you graduate, and again, I think my advice would be that you have to work hard. Probably even harder than at college!

Don't give up on you dreams and your vision, but you may have to find new ways to get there than you at first thought. And keep in touch with as many people as you can - one of the joys of studying at Central Saint Martins is the networks that you develop, simply by being there and making friends.

What are you up to now? How did you get there?

I am the Creative Director and founder of Hannah Martin Ltd, working at keeping my brand growing and making money, so that I can do what I love doing best - designing beautiful jewellery that hopefully breaks the mould a little bit!

I got here by pure tenacity and working harder than I ever imagined. But also by being open to opportunity and learning as I go along.

How has Central Saint Martins helped in your career?

CSM was a great foundation for my career - not only by teaching me the tools of the trade but by being there as a sounding board and strong network of support once I'd left.

The contacts I made at CSM are still invaluable today, and I cannot deny that it is a very helpful name to have on your CV (but only if you can back it up with what you do of course).
