Description

This action packed, modern product design course is suitable for beginners, those with merely an interest in product design who wish to explore the subject for the first time, as much as for those that have design qualifications or are practicing designers and wish to explore this specific area in much more detail.

This 8 week course allows time to really understand, practice and develop key skills in the area of product design, from your own research, decoding and analysing your results to create design directions, originating ideas and developing concepts, using drawing, sketching and simple sketch model making, learning to experiment with materials, create mock ups to develop your ideas, test your ideas (where possible) and produce scaled models and a final presentation model.

This course is the perfect balance of design process learning and a great hands-on opportunity to really develop ideas from tested concepts to three dimensional reality. This course is about using the design process as a vehicle to experiment with ideas, but also about the practical side of design, such as understanding production processes, technical restraint and ergonomics.

Course Level - All levels welcome (although it is better suited to the beginner rather than the practicing product designer)

This is a practical design course with the emphasis on an in depth overview of furniture design and the practice and hands on exploration of ideas more than a theory or history based course, although reference is made to both.

What skills will I learn on this course?

  • Drawing
  • Researching
  • Defining markets
  • Decoding and analysis
  • How to originate new ideas and develop them in 2D and 3D, using model making and drawings
  • Design for production and materials and ways to test the ideas, understanding and implement ergonomic understanding
  • Learn how to communicate ideas and a final design in 2D and 3D and produce working drawings for a products manufacture.
