Online courses occur as 1.5 hour live sessions, during which time you will interact with your tutor, classmates and course content using in-built audio and video chat, instant messaging and the virtual work display area.

Description

This styling course will give students a closer look at the role of the stylist, which includes choosing props, finding locations or designing a set to make a photographic shoot happen on time, on target and on budget. Over the eight weeks, students will develop a clear idea of what exactly a stylist does, who he/she works for and who he/she works with.

Interiors styling might be for an advert, for press literature, for an editorial feature or for a press launch.  It could be for a TV make-over programme or for an exhibition stand. For this course, students will engage with a series of video interviews, inviting industry experts at the very top of their profession to provide invaluable information and advice. This will include the set builders who work with Tim Walker on photography and exhibitions, the props hire company who provide props for the James Bond films, an amazing locations company and an editorial director at Time Inc.

A stylist needs to understand the requirements of the client before arriving at a solution. 

Each week will be focused on one aspect of the role of the stylist, gradually building on knowledge of what the job involves and the skills required. You will be given a task at the end of each session which will build into a body of work that can form the core of a professional portfolio.

During the course you will create colour, trend and lifestyle boards in order to come up with ideas and solutions for a variety of styling projects.

Pre-course tasks:

  • Have a critical look at the retailers around you
  • Try to get to any art exhibitions or trade shows in your area
  • Visit your local library and research all you can about the world of design
  • Try to keep a record of what you see and what you like

Most of all, come with an open mind and open eyes – inspiration is all around you.

Sue Pitman has been an advertising stylist for over 30 years working in fashion, interiors stills, and tv  and formed her production company to work on large scale press events for retailers such as M&S and Sainsburys.
