Description

This exciting, packed modern furniture design and model making course is suitable for beginners, those with merely an interest in furniture design who wish to explore the subject for the first time, as much as for those that have or are practicing design and wish to explore this specific area in more detail.

The course combines both online learning and practice outside of the online classes, which you may engage with as you wish, the more you put in the better the likely outcome. You will learn about and practice the key areas of furniture design, from research, creating design directions, originating ideas and development concepts, using sketching and sketch model making skills that you will learn to produce a final scaled model of your own design.

This is, therefore, the perfect opportunity to practice the leap between ideas and three dimensional reality. This course is about experimentation with ideas, but also about the practical side of design, such as grasping an idea of basic batch production processes and ergonomics.

Many students have used this course as a starting point, which they may progress onto the live Intermediate courses 1, 2 and 3 at CSM, to aid them in their successful applications for design degrees or professional practice.

All levels of experience are welcome, although it is better suited to the beginner rather then the practicing designer. This is a practical design course with the emphasis on an overview of furniture design and the practice and exploration of ideas, rather than on the history of furniture design, although there will be reference to it.
