An introduction to the process of costume design for theatre performance and film. The emphasis is on analysing a character and rendering it visually in order to support the dynamics of the text, create visual relationships and communicate ideas effectively to an audience.

You will finish with a combination of practical understanding of the industry requirements and a portfolio of project work reflecting the costume designer's creative process.

Topics covered

Project work will include:

  • historical research
  • analysis of script for character breakdown
  • the role and responsibility of the costume designer
  • creative interpretation and concept development
  • story boarding
  • communication through presentation of ideas in 2D and 3D
  • pre-production and production processes
  • the development of a critical eye for costume design

Who should take this course?

The course welcomes learners from a wide range of disciplines, including those wanting to develop, diversify and extend their current creative practices towards costume design for performance.

It is also suitable for those wishing to strengthen their portfolio for application to higher education studies in design for performance.

Tutor information

Alison Cartledge has worked in the industry for 20 years as a Costume & Set Designer as well as Costume Supervisor. Designs range from small scale touring to musicals & pantomime.
Array
Gary Thorne has worked as a set and costume designer for over twenty years. He is Head of Design at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). He has been a visiting lecturer at Motley Theatre Design, Central School of Speech and Drama, and Rose Bruford College. Gary is author of 'Stage Design', 'Designing Stage Costumes', and ‘Technical Drawing for the Stage’, all published by Crowood Press.
