A strong fabric story will provide a solid base for your collection. Trends in colours and textures may provide inspiration, but fabrics will influence and determine the shapes and details. In this beginners course you'll learn about the different fabrics used in current ready-to-wear and couture collections.

By the end, you will produce a fabric sample book as evidence of your study that you can build upon as your career advances. This will provide you with an invaluable tool when starting a collection.

Topics covered

  • Organised visits to help you understand the fashion industry and how it works
  • Learning the basics of weaves and yarns and how to identify them in professional salons and trade fairs
  • The fabrics that designers use today in their collections
  • Design development together with constructing a comprehensive fabric range
  • You will form your own body of design work coordinated with relevant fabrics for your chosen market

Tutor information

Maggie Doyle has designed for many years in Paris, both in ready to wear and couture. She also taught for over ten years at Esmod in Paris and Lyon. Currently she is working on her own designs and illustrations.

Materials

Please bring with you to the first session:

  • A4 Marker or layout paper
  • A4 fine card for fabric samples
  • Scissors
  • Your own preferred design materials for drawing, including coloured pencils, markers, inks etc.
