Learn how the computer can facilitate many aspects of the creative processes for textile design, in particular visualisation and experimentation. This beginners course offers textile designers and teachers new opportunities to expand their creative options by using a computer to extend their practice beyond traditional methods. 

Topics covered

Using a Mac computer, we will look at the range of possibilities for:

  • producing imagery on screen
  • painting, drawing and image manipulation
  • creating patterns, repeats and textures
  • colour reduction and palettes for colourways
  • using scanners and printers
  • file management and storage
  • ways of developing and presenting computer-generated ideas

Entry requirements

It is advisable that you have some previous experience of designing on a Mac computer.

Adobe Photoshop will be the principal software used.

Tutor information

Laura Baker is an experienced lecturer in the Textiles programme at Central Saint Martins as well as specialist in 2D print and surface pattern for Fashion and Textiles. She has worked as a textile designer in industry and on a freelance basis for fashion and interiors companies internationally. She is also author of the publication 'Laser Cutting for Fashion and Textiles'.

Shanon Fernandes gained a distinction in Fashion Design and Clothing Technology at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Delhi and then a Distinction in Fashion Design at the Instituto Marangoni (Milan).

She has worked for Ossie Clark in London and has worked on the design & grading of garments, and development of prints and colour ways at Either Or fashion House.

Materials

Please bring with you to the first session:

  • Some visual material for reference and development ie. sketchbook with your own work or images which interest or inspire you. These could be drawings, designs, paintings or photographs (either digital or printed).
  • Please also bring a notebook and pen and a USB stick for storing work.
