This practical online course will teach students how to create documentary photographic stories to be used by magazines and organisations worldwide. Through a variety of assignments, students will explore documentary techniques, methodologies, features, narratives, and professional photo editing.
The aim of the course is guiding students to produce quality photo-essays, and build up a portfolio of images for personal and/or professional use.

Key topics include:

  • How to generate ideas and identify topics in documentary photography
  • Working with manual exposure on location
  • Professional use of available light and flash
  • When to use black&white and/or colour images
  • How to construct photo-essays and create narrative
  • Portfolio building and reviewing

Course Schedule - 8 weeks: 1.5 hours of live class per week

Introduction to the course
Generating ideas for documentary photography
First photo-assignment given

2nd week
Review of first photo-assignment
Working with manual exposure
Second photo-assignment given

3rd week
Review of second photo-assignment
Use of black&white and colour photography

Tutor information

Giulio Mazzarini is a creative director and photographer living in London. He was born in Rome, Italy, where he graduated in Sociology. In 1998 he moved to London, where he completed a Masters in Design Studies at Central Saint Martins, University of The Arts London. After working on the creation of the trend forecasting website WGSN.com, he founded the communication studio GEM. His work has been seen in international magazines such as Vanity Fair, Marie Claire, Elle and Dazed & Confused. He has also contributed to the image development of companies and brands, such as L'Oréal, Reebok, Aston Martin, Citroen and Selfridges. He is an Associate Lecturer of the University of the Arts London, European Institute of Design (Rome) and Groupe INSEEC (Paris & London).
