Explore the elements that make up one of the most popular genres of fiction today: short stories under 1000 words, also called flash fiction. You will look at examples from the best writers in the genre, such as Jorge Luis Borges, Lydia Davis, Dave Eggers and Susana Medina.

Over the weekend, you will read, write and workshop stories in progress.

By the end of the two days you will have a well-structured and complete piece of writing that can be sent out to flash fiction competitions.

Who should take this course?

The course is for aspiring writers who have done some previous writing but not necessarily to an advanced level.

Entry requirements

A good grasp of spoken and written English is essential.

Tutor information

Joanna Pocock graduated with distinction from the Masters in Creative Writing at Bath Spa University. Her short story collection Blue Suburban Skies won the Peters, Fraser & Dunlop award for the best manuscript to come out of a Masters degree in the UK. In 2013 she was awarded an honourable mention in the Bath short story competition, and in 2012 she was shortlisted for the Mslexia short story competition and the Lightship International first novel award. Some of her stories have been anthologised in 'Love on the Road' and 'Good Reads'. She has been teaching creative writing at Central Saint Martins for fifteen years and has taught Genre Fiction at Bath Spa University and Life Writing at Roehampton University, where some of her students have gone on to win substantial international awards. Her writing has appeared in a variety of publications such as The Nation, The Los Angeles Times, The Sunday Independent, The Dark Mountain blog, Distinctly Montana, Mslexia, Litro, The Tahoma Literay Review and 3:AM among others.
