Description

This course takes an art-based approach to writing practice, and offers a range of creative, critical and practice-based ways into writing, including an (Un)creative drift through the internet, Psychogeography, Draw/Write, “I Remember” Mini-Memoir, Collage/Cut Ups/Blackout/Deconstruction, Language as Material, as well as Free Writing and Automatic Writing.

Topics covered

The course will be centred around practical workshops, with additional readings, lecture, seminar. The sessions will be dynamic, fun, productive and highly interactive. Key topics will include:

  • writing as a studio practice
  • page as space
  • language as material
  • "uncreative" writing.

We will consider the notion of the Page as Space, the Death of the Author, Defamiliarisation, Found Text and Readymades.

By the end of the course you will have explored a range of new methodologies as entry points into writing and dealing with the blank page. You should find a new energy in your writing and creative practice, invigorated by this interdisciplinary approach.

You will learn to be open in your approach to writing , how to produce work within short time-frames, and how to build a portfolio of new pieces. The course will also help you to develop critical objectivity and ways into self-reflective practice

Level :This course is suitable for writers at any level, and especially for beginner writers and those wishing to reinvigorate their practice.

Tutor information

Andrea Mason is a graduate of the UEA Creative Writing MA, and is currently a Creative Writing PhD candidate at Goldsmiths. She has published short stories in The Happy Hypocrite, Frozen Tears III, and the inaugural Post-Experimental issue of Bartleby Snopes as well as online at Necessary Fiction, Notes From the Underground, Spilling Ink Review, Writers’ Hub and The Journal of Wild Culture.
She also runs Literary Kitchen, www.literarykitchen.co.uk, a creative writing enterprise, which in June 2014 hosted the inaugural Literary Kitchen Festival, at the Peckham Pelican.
