Description

There is an increasing emphasis on the visual in all types of work, from highly skilled professional roles to basic office positions. Yet the principles and methods underpinning graphic design can appear vague and are generally not readily available. Each class of this course will connect graphic design to common visual tasks (e.g. presentations) investigating design's role within this process. Several of these connections may extend over more than one session.

For those interested, the appropriate software applications/programming languages will be identified and within certain limits explained. These applications/languages would include Adobe Creative Suite, HTML and CSS.

The course will be taught by a combination of short lectures, project work, and workshops - all making connections between design and its deployment. Students would benefit on several fronts. Primarily, they would gain an understanding of how to improve their visual skills, exploring aspects of design they might not have previously considered. Secondly they would receive an introduction to the ways through which they might integrate these skills into practical work settings. Finally through the linked series of lectures they will gain a structured overview of design history and theory.

Who should take this course?

This course is aimed at individuals who are interested in learning about practical and theoretical aspects of graphic design applicable to multiple work-related contexts.
