Description

Designed for those who wish to improve on existing painting skills and welcoming newcomers to the practice, this course will develop your ability to describe texture, tone, form and colour using the medium of oil paint.

You will be encouraged to produce a series of vibrant paintings which strike a balance between spontaneity and fine detail, experimenting with various compositions, lighting conditions and perspectives.

Focusing on traditional still life elements such as flowers, fruit and fabric, our subject matter will broaden to incorporate more familiar items which have become icons of contemporary modern life.

Topics covered
•    How to apply colour, texture and layers to still life oil painting
•    Practical work is supported by reference to the work of experienced painters, which can be used as a source of inspiration

Level
The course is suitable for students of all levels, including those with some previous experience. Numbers are kept to a maximum of 16 (sometimes fewer), which gives time for the tutor to go round and give one-to-one advice according to individual needs.

Outcomes
By examining a variety of still life set-ups and themes, we aim to advance your knowledge of materials, techniques and processes in order to strengthen your future painting practice.

Tutor information

Alice White is a professional oil painter based in London. She has many years of experience teaching painting at Central Saint Martins. Courses that she teaches include Beginners Painting, Painting the Nude, Still Life and Contemporary Oil Painting.

Materials

Please bring to the first session:

  • A wide range of artists' oil paints: Titanium White, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Alizarin Crimson, Viridian Green, Sap Green, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, Cadmium Red, Windsor Violet, Cadmium Yellow & Lemon Yellow, and Raw Umber
  • One large stretched primed canvas 24 x 30 inches (approximately) and/or canvas board.
  • 3 small primed canvases and/or canvas board
  • One A3 Canvas Paper Pad suitable for Oils
  • Palette ( wooden or plastic),
  • Purified linseed oil, or poppyseed oil
  • Brushes ( at least one size 12 flat, some round and one small round size 3)
  • Oil rag/ kitchen cloth
  • Odourless mineral spirit: Sansodor, Shellsol T or Zest-IT.

    Note for all courses: Use of turpentine or white spirit is not allowed. Vegetable oil is a cleaner, cheaper, safer and odour-free alternative. It is also environmental friendly and safer for people with skin allergies
