Description

This course provides a sound introduction to wood engraving, a powerful method of printmaking which is steeped in traditional craft yet has a lively position in contemporary art. Over the five days, you will create prints from your own drawings using key engraving techniques. The course will be perfect for anyone who draws and wishes to print using methods that can be easily practised at home as they require little space and equipment. Engraving tools are provided.

Who should take this course?

  • Those interested in handmade books and the traditional book arts.
  • Both beginners and experienced artists, including those wishing to learn a new technique/find a new means of expression
  • Students building a portfolio for college application.

Topics covered

  • We will cover some core wood engraving techniques such as preparing the block and cutting the image
  • You will use a range of specialist tools and printing by hand.
  • Clear instruction, demonstrations and one-to-one tuition will guide you through every stage.
  • The images you produce will be in black and white and will be quite small.

Entry requirements: Please note that an enthusiasm for drawing would be most helpful. The course would be quite difficult for people who are not comfortable at drawing.
