This two day workshop is for anyone who would like to learn about relief printing by making a linocut print which can be used for cards, illustration, textile design or small print editions.

Open to illustrators, textile designers, printmakers and students from a variety of disciplines, this course will give you the confidence to create your own linocut print, from start to finish.

This workshop is aimed at illustrators, textile designers and  printmakers of other disciplines

What will I take away from the course?

You will complete the course with the confidence to design a simple drawing for a linocut print, transfer it to the block, cut it and print it onto paper.

What are the key topics the course will cover?

  • How to transfer a drawing onto a linocut block
  • Safe cutting techniques using the sharp tools
  • How to take a 'dry' pencil rubbing to monitor the block cutting
  • Creating and using a registration jig
  • The technique of rolling ink thinly onto the blocks
  • Pulling the print using a Baren

What will I achieve?

  • How to draw a design suitable for a black & white linocut print
  • How to use the linocut tools correctly to make a variety of marks which will then have an influence on teh designs drawn for the linocut block
  • How to use a brayer to roll the ink very thinly, enabling you to pull a good print
  • You will discover why it is important to use the correct paper designed to bring out the best in your relief prints

  • Black felt pen (small like a sharpie)
  • Notebook (optional)
  • Drawings or sketches of black & white linocut print ideas - if you have any
  • Any other materials that are listed below that you may have

  • Linocut tools
  • Lino or Japanese Gomoban
  • Tracing paper
  • Masking tape
  • Graphite pencils
  • Small black sharpie pens
  • Breyers or rollers
  • Rolling slabs
  • Linocut printing ink (water-based only)
  • Printing papers - Japanese Barens - Japanese A4 computer printing paper for proofs
  • Newspaper
  • Sponges and cloths for cleaning up
  • Paper towels
  • Cardboard
  • Double sided cellotape
  • Craft knives
  • Cutting matt
  • Ruler
