Description

The landscape has long been a traditional subject matter in painting, and it continues today to inspire and animate creative painters. Acrylic paints are the perfect medium for capturing the light and colour in a landscape, be it figurative or abstract. They also have an advantage over oils, being fast drying and easier to manipulate. We will use this as a means of investigating the multitude of mediums and paints available in the acrylic range that give the ability to match the fineness of watercolour washes, to the richness of oil paint colour and impasto.

You can use a selection of supplied imagery, your own sketches or photos, and even make some supervised foraging. You will also need to bring in good quality acrylics, as recent advances in the way acrylic paint dries, i.e. retaining its richness of colour as when wet, means that some older brands will not have the same quality. Suggested brands are highlighted in the materials list.

Roger Gill is an artist and tutor who works in London and who has exhibited in the UK and Europe. He teaches a number of drawing and painting courses at Central Saint Martins, including courses on life painting, oil painting techniques, portrait drawing and painting and bespoke one-to-one tuition.

Materials

Please bring to the first session:

  • A selection of small, medium, and large brushes
  • Couple of water containers
  • Palette knife
  • Palette
  • The following, if possible, in Winsor and Newton: acrylic flow release, universal acrylic primer, acrylic retarder, acrylic glazing medium, acrylic medium moulding gel.
  • Winsor and Newton artist acrylic colours: Cobalt Blue, Indian Yellow (or Transparent Yellow ), Naples Yellow, Indian Red, Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Medium, Cadmium Yellow Medium and Hookers Geen
  • Cartridge paper 200-250gsm
  • We will also need canvases, the size of these to be discussed on the first day
