Description

This course will explore the formal ways in which paintings are constructed. Looking at a range of artists, you will experiment with a variety of different ideas, techniques and materials to explore the questions of 'what makes a painting interesting' and 'what the language of painting is'. The course aims to help you to develop your own style and interests.

Topics covered

  • Exercises will revolve around narrative, surface, composition.
  • Texture, scale and colour will also be covered.
  • We will work with a life model for some of the sessions.
  • You will be encouraged to leave the course with a range of work and ideas about how to progress your work.

Who should take this course?

This course is suitable for beginners. More experienced students and artists who wish to reinvigorate their practice and refresh their skills are also welcome.

Roger Gill is an artist and tutor who works in London and who has exhibited in the UK and Europe. He teaches a number of drawing and painting courses at Central Saint Martins, including courses on life painting, oil painting techniques, portrait drawing and painting and bespoke one-to-one tuition.

Materials

Please bring with you to the first session:

  • A1 cartridge paper 220g (5 sheets),
  • Pens/pencils/rubber
  • Medium willow charcoal

For the following sessions:

  • A set of large cheap brushes (called 'rounds')
  • Cup or jar for water
  • Kitchen roll
  • Large palette or palette pad or greaseproof paper
  • Please purchase a set of basic acrylic paints, including burnt umber, sienna, ultramarine and/or cobalt blue, cerulean blue, cadmium red, cadmium yellow,lemon yellow.
  • Black and white acrylic paint will be provided

Please note that we will be painting on paper.
