Learning the techniques of colour mixing together with its application, the use and creation of textures, and the various compositional elements, are just a few of the skills needed by students practicing oil painting. A lot of these decisions can be intuitive, but it is good to be aware of what is needed to amplify and fine tune them if needed.
Throughout the course we will be using a number of selected techniques, starting with the construction and preparation of your own canvas, the creation of a variety of grounds for the oils, the use of grisaille, glazing, impasto, alla prima, and the mixing of colour, collage, projection, together with the assembly and arrangement of these elements to create a series of well composed paintings.
We will also look at painters past and present, at their, inspiration, ideas and techniques, to see if some of these could be incorporated into your own work. To facilitate this, you will need to bring in with you on the first day, some ideas or imagery that can be used as your subject matter and vehicle for these techniques, together with some photos/ images of your favourite types of paintings.
The accent throughout the course will be on creativity and experimentation! You will need a good selection of oil paints, mediums and equipment.
