Tutor information

Hi, this is Sion Ap Tomos, I’m an illustrator and educator and I eat, drink and breathe drawing! I love talking about it, demonstrating it, sharing knowledge about it and helping people to get the most out of doing it. I don’t think it matters why you want to draw it’s just good for you - another way to communicate which is no bad thing to have in my opinion.

I studied illustration at Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art and have worked as a freelance illustrator for a number of years in a variety of areas including editorial illustration, poster illustration, factual and reportage illustration and Illustrating for educational reference.
I’ve been talking about and teaching drawing for 16 years including 10 years on the Central Saint Martins Illustration/Graphics BA program. I love teaching on short courses in particular with the emphasis on sharing practical knowledge and helping students to use what we pass on in a way that works for them.

Materials

Please bring with you:

  • A range of graphite pencils, specifically if possible: 2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B
  • An Eraser (generally the softer the eraser feels in your fingers the better it is at picking up graphite)
  • A pencil sharpener
  • An A4 sketch pad preferably with detachable pages (useful for scanning, photocopying and displaying). Daler Rowney make a 30 sheet cartridge pad (130gms weight) which has a yellow cover, well priced in most art shops. Alternatively DR make a sketching pad (50 sheets, 90gms weight, blue cover) which is also very reasonably priced. Paper is thinner and lower in quality but ideal for making lots of experimental drawings, sketches, doodles and mistakes! Ultimately choose whichever feels right in the shop bearing in mind that this will be our "working" pad.
  • An A3 drawing pad, again with detachable pages, but also heavier weight of paper. DR make a heavyweight pad (220gms, pink cover) again at a reasonable price. This pad we will use for more ambitious drawings and for use with different materials during the course

If you feel you already have something similar in your possession, or perhaps sketchpads/type of paper that you feel established with then by all means bring them instead. Likewise, don't feel the need to buy the other materials new if you already have some used ones that still have life in them!
