Description

This course is designed for anyone, including absolute beginners who wish to acquire the necessary skills for painting in oil. It will serve as an introduction to all that is essential in the great tradition of painting. You will learn how to construct directly with the paint brush a pictorial image concentrating on tonal value, luminosity and texture.

Inspiration will be drawn from painting a broad range of subjects directly from life, such as still life, figure and familiar environments. You will learn to see form in space rather than objects literally. Emphasis will be placed on learning how to handle the paint and you will learn how to build up a picture working directly into the fresh paint, i.e. “wet on wet”.

For grounds you will use gesso primed paper taped on board which will give you more freedom over the choice of format as is done by many French painters. You will be given assignments which will be reviewed weekly.

John will be giving demonstrations throughout the eight weeks. There will also be the possibility for those in the UK to meet in London for gallery visits.

Course Schedule - 8 weeks: 1.5 hours of live class per week

Week 1 - Introduction, preparation of grounds, organising your palette.

Week 2 - Tonal values, looking at the subject and constructing a composition directly with paint.

Week 3 - Looking at the subject as pictorial space.

Week 5 - Learning how to paint “wet on wet”.

Week 6 - Painting throughout the ages.
