This is a practical course ideal for anyone who wishes to support their art and design studies with additional drawing skills and want to strengthen their portfolio. It provides you with an introduction to the fundamentals of drawing and goes on to explore a broad range of approaches and materials.
We will practice a range of drawing techniques and methodologies. You will be encouraged to extend your ways of thinking about drawing and to gain confidence in pushing your work into new directions. We will approach drawing as a discovery and will attempt to think through drawing.
Topics covered include:
- observational skill
- life drawing and still life
- line, form, tone and texture
- scale, proportion and composition
- guidance on how to build a sketchbook
- advice on future areas of study
By the end of the course you will have explored and developed a range of drawing techniques and will have more confidence in your drawing abilities and potential. In addition, some of your finished work may be included in your portfolio.
Level: Beginners as well as more experienced students.

Rochelle Fry is an artist and educator who lives and works in London. After completing her studies at the Royal Academy Schools in London she has exhibited her work widely in London and internationally. As a long standing member of Five Years, a well-established artist run gallery, she curates exhibitions and coordinates collaborative projects.
Rochelle has extensive experience teaching short courses at CSM including Art & Design Summer workshops for 13 to 17 year old students, Drawing Skills Workshop short-course and one-to-one portfolio bespoke courses. She also works independently, mentoring students for successful art university entry. Additionally, she teaches drawing to civil engineers at City University, London.

- 2B/3B pencils
- putty eraser
- craft knife
- masking tape
You will need the following items later in the course:
- willow charcoal sticks - thick or extra thick
- putty erasers (Winsor Newton or Daler Rowney are best)
- a newspaper
