Description

Designed to ignite your imagination, this course will challenge and develop your existing drawing and painting skills through a series of innovative creative approaches. Using modern practical methods, familiar subjects such as the still life and the nude model will be addressed from a fresh perspective, re-imagining classical art subjects and the surrounding environment in order to create new artworks. A solid technical grounding will form the basis of our approach.  The work created during this course could be ideal for inclusion in portfolios for entry to A-Level or similar courses in Graphics, Fine Art or Design.

Topics covered

A stimulating range of subjects, materials and approaches will be utilised, including:

  • still life and figure painting
  • using paint, collage, charcoal, inks, crayons and even tea and coffee
  • introducing new methodologies
  • exploring experimental approaches which will allow you to adapt and take the next step in your making process

Who should take this course?

This course is ideal for any student considering further study within the arts. It will provide an excellent creative grounding for young people from all backgrounds.

This course will complement training provided by other short courses for 16-18 year olds, such as ‘Life Drawing’, ‘Life Painting’ and ‘Art and Design Workshops’.

Entry requirements: None

Level: Beginners as well as students with some previous experience wishing to develop their skills further.

Tutor information

Alice White is a professional oil painter based in London. She has many years of experience teaching painting at Central Saint Martins. Courses that she teaches include Beginners Painting, Painting the Nude, Still Life and Contemporary Oil Painting.

Materials

Please bring with you to the first session:
•    An A3 portfolio or tube to carry work home with you
•    A Sketchbook
•    Masking Tape
•    Willow charcoal
•    A range of drawing pencils (from 4H to 4b)
•    Putty Rubber
•    Pencil sharpener
•     Drawing inks (any colour, or sepia/black if you prefer)
•     Drawing nib and pen
•    1xPad Watercolour Paper
•    Small bottle PVA Glue
•    Scissors
•    1xPad A3 Paper Suitable for Acrylic Paint
•    3 primed canvas boards or small canvases the size(s) you want to work with. (e.g under 50cm on the longest side)
•    A palette with wells
•    A range of brushes of differing size and shapes
•    Kitchen towel or old rags to clean your brushes and palette
•    Water pot
•    A range of acrylic paints (including Titanium white, Cadmium red, Alizarin crimson, Ultramarine blue, Cadmium yellow, Lemon yellow, Raw umber,
Burnt umber)
•    Any of your favourite drawing/painting mediums (This can include Coloured crayons, Felt tip pens, Colouring Pencils, Pastels, Biros, Chalk pens, Ink Pens, Watercolour paints, Gouache, Palette Knives, etc)
•     Source Materials to create your work from. (Please consider this carefully; it's important to use imagery which is inspiring and meaningful to you. Anything you bring in can be photocopied, to ensure that the original is not damaged. You could include: Sketches, Photographs, Magazine cuttings, Travel tickets, Letters, Books, Fabric, etc)
•    Do not bring oil paints
