Embroidery - Level 1

Description

During this course students will be introduced to a variety of hand embroidery styles including ribbon-work, cut-work, shadow-work, stump-work and Indian mirror-work.

Starting with a simple running stitch, laced running stitch, whipped running stitch and back stitch, by the end of the first day we will have progressed to more complicated techniques such as French knots which can be used to attach sequins; whipped spiderweb; woven spiderweb and a needle-woven ribbon rose.

Other stitches taught on this course include:

•chain stitch, blanket and buttonhole stitch
•daisy stitch, stem stitch and couching
•cross stitch, star stitch and herringbone
•reverse herringbone for shadow-work
•overcast stitch for cut-work
•ribbon stitch for silk ribbon flowers
•long and short satin stitch for thread painting
•raised satin stitch for stump-work
•fly stitch, feather and bullion stitch

Other topics covered include:

•how to prepare and use an embroidery hoop
•introduction to different types of needles and thread
•how to transfer designs to a variety of fabrics
•how to attach beads and sequins
•how to use Bondaweb for appliqué
•how to attach wire and padding for stump-work
•how to embroider and cover a button
•how to embroider and make a felt needle case
•how to make a lavender bag with shadow-work

Whilst creating several small embroidered pieces that could be made into gifts, used in accessory design or shown as part of a textile design portfolio, students will leave this course with a broad repertoire of embroidery styles and stitches, and the confidence to teach themselves more.

Equipment and materials are provided. However, students should bring with them a small pair of sharp embroidery scissors.

Entry requirements:

No previous experience is needed. Perfect for beginners and absolute beginners, this course will also interest those people who have done some embroidery before and wish to practice and develop their skills.

Rowena Luke-King has had an extremely diverse career in design. She has worked as a designer and colour consultant for textile design studios and leading retailers such as Marks & Spencer and NEXT. She has produced collections of clothes, accessories, hand printed fabrics, greetings cards and wrapping papers for a number of stores including Fiorucci and has worked as a stylist in the music industry (stage clothes that she created for 'Adam and the Ants' have been exhibited in the Victoria & Albert Museum). Rowena studied fashion and textiles at Central Saint Martins and is currently involved in sourcing vintage fabrics for the fashion industry. www.rowenalukeking.com
