Kidswear has, for too long, been perceived by the fashion elite as a by-product of its adult counterpart. But this is not the case anymore as most luxury brands are currently launching or relaunching their kidswear collections alongside established, as well as young and emerging, specialist brands.
As regards to this market, the leading specialist brands are approaching it with a mix of sophistication, fun and modernist classicism. Always deeply routing their collections into the specific world of childhood not trying to make of children mini versions of their parents.
During this course, students will look at case studies of key players on the international scene in order to better comprehend how they put their ranges together.
They will look at themes, choices of prints and materials, use of colours, silhouettes and make details and, this way, students will explore their own take on the matter by producing mood boards, colour palettes, flat drawings and illustrations.
At the end of the course, students will have a comprehensive kidswear project to present in their portfolios.

Approaching kidswear as specific market with its own codes as far as design is concerned
What will the I achieve?
- How to build moodboard, choose colour palette, select specific fabrics and design shapes for the kidswear market
How will the course be taught?
- There will be an analysis of how kidswear is designed by established and emerging specialist brands
- Project work
Week 1: Presentation of key players in the kidswear market by the tutor. For the following week, the students must come with their own observational research on specialist brands
Indications from the tutor on how to select a theme and build a moodboard. What is a moodboard? What is its use? How to extract a colour palette from it. For the following week, the students must come with their own images to start working on their moodboards and colour palettes
Week 2: Moodboard and colour palette making and reviewing
Week 3: Print and silhouettes research
Week 4-5: Silhouettes design
Week 5-6: Flat drawings from templates + introduction to flat drawings on Illustrator
Week 7: Finalisation of 6 silhouettes + flat-drawings corresponding to 1 key silhouette
Week 8: Presentation of projects back to the group, Q and As
Please note: This course is for students aged 18 and older
Please bring with you to the first session:
- Fashion (both kids and adults), photography, interior design etc... magazines to be cut into to create moodboards
- Small cuttings of solid colour fabrics or yarns to create colour palettes
- Any art material they feel confident drawing and colouring-up designs/silhouettes with (pencils, felt-tips, pantone markers, water-colours etc...)
