Description

Drawing the figure wearing vintage clothing and textiles, you will produce many sketches and finished pieces of work using a variety of media. Working from unique items from the tutor's personal collection of antique clothing, accessories and textiles, we will draw a different model each day, finding effective ways to describe the figure, clothes, costume and textiles. 

Topics covered

Life drawing: This will help you to know what lies beneath before attempting to draw the clothed figure. It will include a session on proportion & basic anatomy.

Portraiture: How to achieve a likeness; concentrating on heads, hands & feet.

Drawing textiles workshop: Using a variety of media to describe various textures; fur, lace, leather, chiffon, velvet, quilting, and embroidery.

Drawing the clothed figure: How to use creases in a skirt for example to imply the position of the legs.

External study trip: A half-day visit to the National Portrait Gallery.

Who should take this course?

This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in developing drawing skills for portraying vintage clothing and textiles on the figure. 

 


Tutor information

Judy Purbeck is an artist specialising in figurative drawing and she is also one of the founding directors of 'English Eccentrics' fashion company. The two spheres of drawing and fashion inform her work and teaching practise.
Judy completed an MA in 'Drawing in Fine Art Practice' at UAL in 2000 and has been teaching Life drawing, Clothed figure drawing and Portraiture since then. In 2009, Judy was one of the presenters for the Channel 4 TV / Artangel series 'Life Class: Today's Nude'. Her own work often features vintage clothing and students on this course will be given the unique experience of drawing from Judy's personal vintage archive. 

Materials

Please bring with you to the first session:

- Ink, dip pens, paper scissors.

- Coloured papers for collage, Pritt stick.

- Water colour, paint brushes, linseed oil.

- Charcoal, stumps.

- Graphite, crayons, chalk pastels.
