Whether you are interested in designing and making hats for pleasure or thinking of embarking on a more commercial venture with your work, this course for beginners is an ideal place to start. The workshop atmosphere of the course allows flexibility so that each person’s experience, ability and taste are taken into consideration.

During the week students will learn to block, finish and trim a variety of felts and straws on the college’s extensive collection of wooden blocks. Depending on the scale of the projects you undertake during the week, you should expect to leave with two or three completed pieces.

Judy Bentinck is a London based couture milliner with an international client base. She specialises in creating bespoke hats for special occasions.  She has taught the Millinery Workshop course at Central Saint Martins for several years.  www.judybentinck.com

Materials

One wool felt hood and sinamay for one hat will be supplied.
 
Please bring with you to the first session:

  • A basic sewing kit, comprising:
  • Tape measure
  • thimble
  • scissors
  • household pins
  • hand sewing needles.
  • An apron

There will be advice given during the course regarding other materials and suggested suppliers.
