What is curating? This course is aimed at people who want to know what’s involved in curating exhibitions, art projects or independent events. It looks at the wide range of current curatorial activities and at what a curator's work is; it also considers art publications. The course framework is a series of simple models; including historical examples, making a three-dimensional model, how to structure an application for funding, building a budget and organising marketing plus a guide to the practical aspects of installation.
It’s run as a mix of group activities, open-ended discussions, presentations and practical instruction. Over the weeks we pick up different ideas and roles within curatorial practice to identify those areas we are most drawn to and investigate what each job involves.
Practical help is given on writing, specifically in the area of writing for artists. The course is supported by suggestions for reading and encouragement to see exhibitions and actively critique them.
*An all day workshop session is booked for the Saturday immediately before the final evening class. On this Saturday we build an exhibition based on ideas volunteered by the group. The exhibition will be located at the Central Saint Martins building and there will be opportunities for students to invite a limited number of guests to a private viewing.
* Please note the Saturday workshop is not included as part of the shorter summer course.
Please note: This course is for students aged 18 and older
Please bring with you to the first session:
- An A4 notebook
- Experience of a visit to an exhibition that you have enjoyed
