There are a myriad of jobs in the fashion world and the boundaries aren’t always well defined. Where does the role of an art director begin and a stylist end? Is an event about experience design, retail, marketing or social engagement – and who leads it?

During this course you have guests lecturers from a wealth of different industry professionals deepening your knowledge of the fashion industry, the career options open to you and how these creative individuals find their inspiration in an industry that demands their practitioners are ahead of the curve and always coming up with new ideas.

You will also get to put into practice the tools and techniques these professionals use every day in their working livee to reinvigorate and enhance their creativity and find inspiration.

On this course you will:

  • Be given an introduction to the fashion industry, its cultural icons, and figures of note away from the more headline grabbing role of the fashion designers
  • Have guest lectures for a variety of industry professionals including a: photographer, social media expert, promoter and more
  • You will create your own (physical) moodboards
  • Visit a range of stores and learn how to look more critically at them and understand how to use these visits as a source of inspiration
  • Get out onto the streets and learn how to tap into the innovation that is around us every day
  • Learn about the “Fashion Year” and how the cycle of seasons and shows trickles down into publishing and retail
  • Look at the digital world of promotion and using fashion film and exploring the link between fashion and music.
  • Outcomes
    By the end of this course you should have a good idea of different roles in the fashion Industry way from the more obvious Fashion Designer. You will be able to start to look at your own skills and strengths and understand how they can be applied to different roles in the fashion industry and have an idea of what you need to do to start to pursue that career.

    Who should take this course
    This course is suitable for beginners with an interest in Fashion whether it is fashion design, textiles, styling, photography, art direction or events. For anyone who knows they want to work in the fashion Industry but are not sure where to start.

    Tutor information

    Kristine Kilty is the Men's Fashion Editor at FAULT Magazine.  She also works as a freelance creative director and stylist.  Kristine is based in London but works between London, Paris, New York and LA, with a number of her shoots being commissioned for leading Asian luxury titles.  

    Kristine began her career in Ireland as a fibre artist. Her passion for texture, colour and pattern prompted her to move to London to study Textile Design at Central Saint Martins. After graduation, she worked as a designer at prestigious fashion houses such as Alexander Mc Queen, Michiko Koshino and Tim Ryan knitwear. Following a return to Central Saint Martins to undertake an MA in Fashion Design, Kristine's talent soon became noticed and she found herself in popular demand as a stylist and fashion consultant. Working for Vivienne Westwood, she dressed celebrities and high profile clients for red carpet and public events. Kristine now works as a freelance creative director and fashion stylist, continuing to advise her celebrity clients in addition to working on advert campaigns, editorials, music videos, exhibitions and numerous creative collaborations.

    Kristine also works as a lecturer at UCA Rochester on the BA Fashion Promotion and Media course, as pathway leader for the styling students (3rd Year- final major project) and as unit leader for the Fashion Film module (2nd Year Students).  Additionally, Kristine has worked as a guest lecturer at Central Saint Martins on the Fashion Photography and Image Making & Styling short courses.
