Learn how to transform a new idea or invention into a business venture from a design and branding perspective and through a creative process. Working in groups you will develop a new initiative, from the conceptualisation stages through to developing and planning a new business opportunity.

This beginners course will introduce you to some useful tools and strategies that will help you generate and refine ideas for a new business venture.Those techniques can be applied to your creative processes as well as the development of your own business.

Topics covered

Emphasis will be given to both analytical and creative approaches to developing a business.

You'll learn how to develop a strong value business proposition - what it offers of value to consumers - aligned with the products or services delivered.

You will be introduced to concepts in business development through a creative process.

There will be workshops with a few short lectures in between, when key activities will be introduced.

You will be working in small groups with other students to develop a venture together.

Financial aspects of business are not covered.

The course would be useful for entrepreneurs, designers and creative individuals who are thinking about starting a new venture.

Tutor information

Dr Monika Hestad is an Associate Lecturer on the MA Innovation Management course at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design (CSM), and runs the consultancy Brand Valley Design. She has an MA and PhD in industrial design and branding from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. Monika has been consultant in high-tech and FMCG sectors, to fashion brands as well as for service focused companies. She is involved in management and design teaching projects in London, Beijing, Oslo and Seoul, and her book Branding and Product Design: An integrated perspective is published by Gower Applied Research in March 2013.

  • Paper (A4 or A3 sketch book/paper)
  • Markers
  • Recommended to bring laptop, iPad or similar to do market research. However, please note that this is not a requirement.
