If you are serious about editing film and video but need a deeper understanding of the core of this art, this course is probably for you. It will provide you with a comprehensive guide on how to tell a powerful story in the editing room. It will also provide you with a precise set of methods while maturing your creative skills to fulfill your vision through lectures and practical workshops.

Topics covered

Storytelling, narrative structure and film language are crucial to master the art of editing. Through case studies of a wide range of different film genres such as documentaries, fiction, commercials, music videos and art films, you will study fundamentals of editing.

A set of exercises will enable you to travel through an exciting journey where you will comprehend the essence of editing.

We will use industry software ranging from Final Cut Studio and After Effects but the emphasis is more on the visual art of story telling and not technical skills.

This could also be an opportunity for any students wishing to make their own films to bring along material to try out ideas.

Tutor information

Abdul Mohammed has over 20 years of experience in the creative industry with a considerable amount in print production and graphic design. He trained as an Industrial Designer followed by an MSc in Architecture and Computation. His early professional experience was in graphic design and film and video. He has been a tutor for Short Courses at Central Saint Martins for a numbers of years covering a range of subject areas from film and video to creative design. Abdul also works across Central Saint Martins and UAL teaching and developing programs in digital tools for staff, students, Postgraduate level and a number of Undergraduate courses in the School of Graphic and Industrial Design.

Esteban Gitton is a producer/writer/director who won 3 Golden Awards at 2006 Kodak Commercial Award, Best international short fiction Film at Tehran Short Film Festival 2006, Best Visual Effect at Animex Awards 2007, nominated at Cannes 2007. He teaches filmmaking to BA graphic design courses at Central Saint Martins.
