Taught by: Rock Galpin.

Description

An intensive 3 week course combining conceptual and practical skills in furniture design and model making. Working both in a studio and workshop, you will learn how to research and how to apply your findings in order to define your design directions. You will make extensive use of drawing, sketching and sketch model making in order to refine your ideas. The outcome will be your final scaled model.

The course will also give you a comprehensive overview of current professional furniture design practices. You will also get a useful insight into some practical aspects of design such as batch production, technical restraint and ergonomics. Plus, you will be able to make extensive use of Central Saint Martins' workshops with the support of specialist skilled technicians.

Topics covered

  • originating new ideas and developing concepts in 2D and 3D
  • model making, drawing and sketching
  • experimenting with wood, wire, metal and plastics
  • creating mock ups
  • testing your ideas in scale and 1:1
  • producing scaled models

Who should take this course?

  • Those with an interest in furniture design who wish to explore the subject for the first time.
  • Graduate and practicing designers wishing to focus on this area in more depth.
  • Students wishing to start building a portfolio for future study in product design.

This course offers you a perfect balance between design conceptualisation and practical skills that will transform your ideas and concepts into three dimensional reality.

Level: All levels of experience are welcome, although it is better suited to the beginner rather than the practicing product/furniture designer.
